African Proverb: The one closest to the enemy is the real leader.
Meaning: In this proverb, our elders have given us a criterion in determining who the real leader is in the midst of a difficult situation. Alas, so many people who parade themselves as leaders, are not leaders; they are misleaders. They think they are leaders, but in reality they are not. They are misled! In warfare, particularly in the olden times, they had what is called formation. This was comprised of three main parts: the vanguard, the middle guard, and the rearguard. There were different formations but if arranged into a column, the vanguards preceded the middle-guards which in turn preceded the rearguard. The vanguards were the leading part of an advancing military formation. Their main job was seeking out and securing the enemy. They take initiatives. The hottest part of battle was around the vanguards because once they are overcome, the rest succumb. Battles have greatly evolved but the role of the leader has not. “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." (John C. Maxwell).
